Science and society benefit from diverse viewpoints and lived experiences. We aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and feel welcome. We acknowledge the disproportionate suffering of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color and unequivocally believe Black Lives Matter. We denounce racism and biases against Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, and members of LGBTQIA+ communities.
Black Lives Matter.
Love is Love.
In the Fringe Lab, we are dedicated to equality in science, in academia, and beyond. We recognize that our differences result in better science, teaching and mentoring. Discriminatory behavior or attitudes are not welcome in the lab.
We also acknowledge that commitment to anti-racism, and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) require ongoing, continuous investment to educate ourselves, to recognize our own privileges and over-representation, and to listen. We acknowledge this process as challenging and at times uncomfortable and that it requires intentional commitment.

Anti-Racism and DEI Actions:
- Commit to the recommendations of the Call for a Robust Anti-Racism Plan for the Geosciences
- Continue to educate ourselves and promote DEI in our labs and classrooms, at the University of Minnesota, in science and society.
- Approach learning and mentoring as inclusive, active and individualized.
- Be considerate of and supportive of perspectives while also sharing our own culture and values reciprocally.
- Maintain a climate of constructive engagement and mutual respect.
- Be supportive, accepting, and constructive and commit to actively listen to each other with empathy and openness.
- Engage in outreach and community involvement, including Market Science. For example:
- Acknowledge our unconscious biases and educate ourselves to both understand and overcome unconscious biases. For example:
- Believe in kindness and generosity — we are human, mistakes will happen.
- Maintain an open-door policy for feedback or concerns
